Fragment 2 of «Jinete Último Reino» puts on stage the passage from dream to letter, the literacy and other normalization processes (such as those related with gender and sexual identity) to which children are exposed until their colour or difference is retained in a fixed meaning and classified. Where does this violence come from? Where does it go? And what part of body differences resist the norm? «Frag. 2» also travels briefly to the past, to the civil war and fascism, and to the future, to the indentitarism and reactionary moment that we are living and will be inhabiting, always looking for those parts of our bodies, language and desire that survive in our gestures, calligraphy and errors. Formally, «Frag. 2» is a 3D poem that synchronizes stereo sound with text on screen with performance thanks to the help of sound and graphic scores. A theory of language and writing is displayed through the combination of graphics, performance, sound and the live friction of what we hear and what we read.

María Salgado and Fran MM Cabeza de Vaca have been working together since 2012, always with the spoken word as a transition between poetry and music as a central component. This has already resulted in works of various kinds, e.g. an album, a two-month sound installation, a book, as well as graphic publications.

Bring a Friend - A curational experiment

The crux of festival curation is (among other things) to keep a good balance between new discoveries and established groups and productions that are already touring from festival to festival in the international scene. Both - and of course the large field in between - have their place in a programme, and the mixture of both is what makes a festival like auawirleben. Finding new groups is not always easy. At the end of the day, it’s easiest to watch what is promoted by other festival directors or theatre directors. Gatekeepers serve gatekeepers.
At the same time, we increasingly feel the desire to work with ‘our’ artists in a broader and more sustainable way than simply inviting them to perform, they arrive and leave straight afterwards. We want to know more about them and their environment, and in turn we want to be more open with them about our processes of festival making.
We have combined the two concerns and asked three of our invited groups to nominate artists for our programme who are from their own local context and who have not toured much internationally. We call this format «Bring a Friend» because we don't want to hide the fact that personal connections often play a role in the theatre business. So, this year you will find three exciting young productions from Tallinn, Madrid and Lyon in the programme. María Salgado and Fran MM Cabeza de Vaca were nominated by La tristura (Madrid).

We will show all three «Bring a Friend» productions on Tuesday 10.5. and conclude with an audience discussion at Grosse Halle, where the nominating artists will also be present (moderated by Mathias Bremgartner).
