Magda Toffler. Versuch über das Schweigen

Boris Nikitin (Basel)

Place Schlachthaus Theater

Language German

Duration 1h 10min

Sunday 14.5. 20:00

On this evening, Boris Nikitin undertakes genealogical research and looks at the history of his grandmother. After she dies at the age of 87, Boris learns that she originally came from a Jewish family. In 1944/45, she had to hide for months in a barn in eastern Slovakia, while most of her family lost their lives in the German extermination camps. Magda kept all this to herself, started a family and became the first professor of chemistry in the young socialist Czechoslovakia. She even hides this secret from her daughters. The monologue "Magda Toffler" is raw, frontal and tender and sheds light on a silence that lurks in many European families in one way or another.

After the performance there will be a conversation.

Boris Nikitin, who is not usually on stage as a director, has made his mark with the two solos Versuch über das Sterben and «Magda Toffler. Versuch über das Schweigen» are theatre evenings all their own in every respect. For all their autobiography, the two texts are universal enough to offer many a very personal point of reference. The reduced form is perhaps the most generous invitation he can offer us.
