Duration 1 h 15 min

The amnesty law («El Pacto del Olvido ») of 1977, which was passed after the death of dictator Francisco Franco, prevented the crimes committed during his 40-year dictatorship from being dealt with in court. This institutionalised forgetting still has an impact on Spanish society today and leaves behind an incomplete national history. A history that perpetuates the survival and dominance of the narrative of the victors. How do we deal with the past? Who tells it, how is it told and what language do we use to describe what happened?

In his production, Sergi Casero Nieto not only poses the big social questions. He also places them in the context of his own family history: «Why do I hardly know anything about my grandmother's past?» Through an auto-fictional narrative, personal experiences, reports and documents collected during the research are combined with memories and oral traditions. In this way, Casero Nieto argues in favour of collecting different perspectives. He shows the limits of collective silence and questions the "official" narratives of history.

Following the performance of El Pacto del Olvido on 26 May, there will be a discussion with the artist at 21:30.

In his work, Sergi Casero Nieto examines the use of performance as a means of presenting research, paying particular attention to the design of scenographic means. Historical information becomes physically present in his work by engaging with counter-narratives such as oral testimonies or collective memory.
