In search of the ultimate proof that ghosts exist, Diederik Peeters has been exploring the damp tunnels that connect science with magic and horror with technology. He reappears regularly to present his findings in different forms: from dance-piece to installation to a radio-play... «Apparitions» is the most recent in this series of works and takes the shape of a fully fledged show.

Convinced that magic can enrich our relation to reality, Diederik takes on the role of an illusionist but quickly gets lost in his own illusions. Using some 19th century optical tricks, he blows life into his own shadow and resurrects some ghosts of the future. In a kind of visual delirium echoes of Méliès or Houdini bump into the 22nd Century. Here, the dead might very well be alive, and the future turns out to be the present.

Diederik Peeters is an officially certified visual artist that accidentally got lost in the stables of stage-art, and usually makes performances, but has also been caught writing texts, inventing installations or crafting other amalgams that are hard to categorise. He is suffering from a pathological preference for confusion. In his work the notion of a solid and unchanging reality is stubbornly sabotaged. Absurdities and contradictions pile up to reveal a universe where everything is constantly transforming, and nothing ever remains what it seems to be.

«Apparitions» is part of the Bring a Friend format. In 2022, we started an attempt to question and soften our role as gatekeepers in the curation process. We asked two of our invited companies to nominate artists from their own local area for our programme, who have not toured much internationally. Diederik Peeters was invited by Antoine Defoort, who is presenting Elles Vivent at aua this year.
